The Evolution Digital Construction team recently faced one of its most complex on-site challenges.
The brief: to support its sister company, Studio Steele, to install more than 50 900kg beams in the basement of an active amenities block.
Making matters even more complicated, the beams had to be installed through an electrical grid within a limited time window.
“There were no second chances.”
Clint Steven, Evolution’s BIM Coordinator, explained that precision was the key to getting the installation right in one go.
“Our client had commitments to keep the amenities active during operational hours, and we had an eight-hour fixed shutdown window to operate, including the demolition by others to provide the access paths for this install”.
Fortunately, the first installation was the only one needed, and all services and demolition plans were known to secondary contractors on arrival so that they could complete their roles.
Getting it right the first time
Step one in any job like this is to ascertain the as-built condition of the work site.
To do this, Evolution Digital Construction used Trimble laser scanning and survey equipment for its geospatial work, including data collection.
The next phase used Cintoo cloud technology to convert laser scan data at the same resolution as the source scanner into one easy-to-use, web-based browser. Cintoo is an essential tool for coordinating models and delivering accurate clash detection.
By optimising the planning part of a construction project, Studio Steel could better organise different team members around a single visual source of truth and overlay their accurate CAD models of the new installation.
“Our goal is to solve problems before they occur. For complex construction projects like this one with 900kg beams, the advanced technology is invaluable in cutting down time, cost and waste,” says Clint.
