This project involved the foundation structure for a high-end home in the Noosa hinterland on a steep sloping block. We utilized 3D LIDAR and robotic total stations, similar to the techniques used typically in the majority of our projects.
The process began with site preparation by the builder and the creation of an initial 3D model to determine the final footing layout and heights, ensuring it worked with the site’s contours. Once confirmed, we returned to the site with one of our robotic total stations to mark out the exact locations for the footings where the excavator operator needed to auger the deep footings.
Before the concrete pour, we returned to the site to assist with accurately locating and setting form tubes and HD bolts. HD bolts are notoriously difficult to locate and ensure their position is maintained prior to, during, and after pours. With some clever profiles and template ideas, we created a system that allowed us to set out once and maintain a check system without a return visit from our survey techs to relocate bumped bolts. This meant a bolt could be repositioned on-site right up until the concrete set.
While the data was initially for site verification and dimensions required for our drafting team, the site data can be virtually accessed by anyone, anywhere in the world, at any time. Our install teams utilized this data to understand the complexity of the site, plan the crane, and fully comprehend the crane reach requirements over overhead obstructions such as power lines and trees. This ensured that the first day on-site was not a lost day in productivity while “we all get our head around the project.” We knew what was there, planned for it, and got it done.
The result was a 100% success rate in landing columns on the HD bolts in an environment where physical gridlines on site were not possible, placing trust in the digital guidance alone.
